Computing small-fleet aircraft availabilities including redundancy and spares

چکیده
Logistics support is a key element of aircraft transportation systems. This paper is concerned with the impact of aircraft spares provisioning decisions on the availability of aircraft. Spares provisioning in this context is complicated by the fact that spares may be shared across aircraft and that aircraft may have redundant systems. In addition, decisions concerning aircraft spares support require a rapid response for safety reasons. Analytical models have proven to provide a quicker response time than corresponding simulation models. There is an existing analytical model that includes the e!ect of redundancy and spares, but the underlying assumption is that a large number of aircraft are being modeled. In many applications, predictions of the number of times an aircraft can #y each day and the number of aircraft that are ready at any time are applied to a small #eet of aircraft. This paper demonstrates the improvement in computational accuracy that is achieved by re#ecting the impact of small numbers of aircraft on availability projections. The approach used is to extend existing "nite queuing spares models to including redundancy. Further, the method is used to optimize spares provision with respect to a user speci"ed availability goal. Although the case study for this work is a military combat aircraft application from the Gulf War, the method is applicable to any small system of vehicles or machines where components may be redundant, demand and repairs may be approximated as following an exponential distribution, and limited access to spare parts is the rule.

Airline fleet assignment concepts, models, and algorithms
The fleet assignment problem (FAP) deals with assigning aircraft types, each having a different capacity, to the scheduled flights, based on equipment capabilities and availabilities, operational costs, and potential revenues. An airline s fleeting decision highly impacts its revenues, and thus, constitutes an essential component of its overall scheduling process. However, due to the large numb...
متن کاملA Simulation Model for Aircraft Maintenance in an Uncertain Operational Environment
We present a discrete-event simulation model for maintenance operations of a fleet of fighter aircraft in crisis situations, where the fleet operations are affected by a threat of an enemy's actions. The model describes the flight process and basic modes of periodic maintenance and failure repairs. Features that are specific to crisis situations include battle damages of the aircraft, decentral...
متن کاملA life-cycle system dynamics model of aircraft-engine maintenance
The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and use of a framework for studying the dynamics of the maintenance system of a fleet of military-aircraft engines in a holistic way, as far as both time and place are concerned. The framework is based on a modular system dynamics simulation model of all the inter-related systems, which are involved throughout the life-cycle of the engine...
متن کاملPredictions of Widespread Fatigue Damage Thresholds in Aging Aircraft
Commercial transport aircraft are required to operate under the concept of damage tolerance. Because of the structural redundancy and the crack arrest capability, the current fleet of commercial aircraft was initially designed to have sufficient residual strength to sustain discrete source damage. However, fatigue damage during the life of an aircraft can significantly reduce the residual stren...
متن کاملAirport Capacity Extension, Fleet Investment, and Optimal Aircraft Scheduling in a Four-Level Market Model: On the Effects of Market Regulations
In this paper we present a four-level market model that accounts for airport capacity extension, fleet investment, aircraft scheduling, and ticket trade. In particular, budget-constrained airports decide on the first level on their optimal runway capacity extension and on a corresponding airport charge. Airports anticipate optimal long-term fleet investment of airlines on the second level, opti...
